In Marrakech, we took a guided tour of the Souks (market), and we’re so glad we did! The sights, smells, sounds and flavors leave us at a loss for words… but we’ll try.
I don’t even know where to begin. We expected something like a market you would find in Mexico or the Caribbean, and it’s not. It has been there since 1071 AD. There are craftsmen and artisans here dying wool and cotton, weaving scarves, making shoes, creating leather bags and belts, and so much more! Our tour took us to a community baker - a nondescript door that only locals know. After walking down dark stairs, locals drop off dough they made at home so that the baker can fire it for them. We also saw how a hammam (sauna) is heated - in a space that has been doing this for more than 500 years.
There were snake charmers (not Nate’s favorite thing but I thought it was pretty cool), monkeys, donkeys, and also cats everywhere.
I got a henna tattoo, we bought some souvenirs, and overall we just tried to embrace everything that was going on around us.
Our resort is outside of town about 5 miles, and we’re happy about that. Inside the Medina (city) is very, very busy with people, motorbikes and vans. So while we loved visiting it, staying in the serenity of where we are is nice to come back to so we can relax by the pool and soak in the sunshine.
